NEW YORK, May 20 (UPI) -- Sandra Lee is recovering after having a double mastectomy in New York City on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old Food Network star announced last week that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.

"What a day," Lee wrote in a Facebook post. "Thank you so much to the doctors, nurses and technicians, and for all of your kind notes. Your stories of hope and recovery mean more than you will ever know."

Lee also shared a photo of her and her partner of 10 years, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, having a "solemn moment" before the surgery.

Cuomo said in a statement that Lee is "doing as well as can be expected" after the five-hour surgery.

"On behalf of Sandy and myself, I want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers over the last few days. Your support has meant the world to us," Cuomo said.

Lee told ABC's Robin Roberts last week that she was "stunned" when she learned of her diagnosis.

"I didn't even cry, I was stunned...You know, and that's just how fast life turns," Lee said. "It turns on a dime."
