LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Gwen Stefani supports her children expressing themselves though personal style.

The 45-year-old singer discussed sons Kingston, 8, and Zuma, 6, in an interview with PrideSource. The brothers are often spotted with painted nails, sometimes to match Stefani's, and appear to have inherited their mother's fondness for quirky fashion.

"What I like to say is that being unique and original is what makes me happy, and I think that rubs off on them," she related. "It's really important more than anything else to not be talked into something, to stand your ground and to be able to be strong about what you feel."

"I want them to learn that being individual and being unique is important," she shared. "I don't want them to try to be like everyone else ... If they do want to, I'll support that as well. You just want them to be happy. It's a short life and it goes by so quick."

Stefani and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale married in 2002, and are also parents to 10-month-old son Apollo. The family enjoyed a vacation to Mammoth Mountain, Calif., over the holidays, and the singer shared a photo of herself with Kingston in their snowboarding gear on Instagram.
