LONDON, April 7 (UPI) -- British Prince Harry's departure from the Arctic Circle was delayed Thursday because the runway his plane was to use has been damaged.

The 26-year-old prince has been taking part in a North Pole trek this week with the Walking With the Wounded team of military veterans.

He was scheduled to leave Thursday to return to the British army where he is a helicopter pilot, but was unavoidably detained and likely won't be home for another day or two, E! News said.

"Prince Harry was due to leave the Arctic today, but owing to damage to the runway at Ice Camp Barneo his departure has been delayed," his representative said. "He will now spend an extra day trekking with the team and return to Barneo tonight to await the first available flight."
