LOS ANGELES, April 16 (UPI) -- U.S. actress and singer Lindsay Lohan says she poked fun of herself in a Funny or Die video this week because she needed a laugh.

Lohan, 22, recently split up with her longtime girlfriend Samantha Ronson and has been a frequent target for the tabloid media thanks to her stints in rehab and brushes with the law.

Lohan said on her MySpace celebrity blog that she decided to make the mock eHarmony dating ad to show she has a sense of humor about her image and troubles.

"I just think it's better to take something negative and turn it into something good ... laughter is the BEST medicine," she wrote on her blog Tuesday.

"She wanted to do a Funny or Die video with all the stuff that everyone's saying," the video's director Eric Appel told Usmagazine.com. "She wanted to respond to it in a funny way, show that she gets it."

Appel went on to describe Lohan as "a blast to work with."

"She came in, did her thing, was really professional," Appel said. "People forget Lindsay Lohan's, like, a good actress. There's so much attention (to everything she does), but... you forget this girl has really good comic timing."
