LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Daniel Barnz has signed on to direct the big-screen adaptation of Alex Flinn's novel "Beastly," CBS Films said Thursday.

The hiring was announced by Amy Baer, president and chief executive officer of CBS Films, a division of the CBS Corp.

Barnz also penned the screenplay for "Beastly," which CBS described as "an edgy romance" about a handsome, yet arrogant, 17-year-old who is physically transformed and must find true love to break the curse.

Barnz previously wrote and directed "Phoebe in Wonderland," which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury prize. That film stars Felicity Huffman, Elle Fanning and Patricia Clarkson.

"Daniel's fresh vision makes him one of the most exciting directors of his generation," Baer said in a statement. "We are thrilled to partner with him as he brings his unique voice to arguably the most universally resonant myth in storytelling."
