'Ninja' guys up for 'Tomatoes' remake

LOS ANGELES, March 12 (UPI) -- "Ask a Ninja" creators Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine are working on a big-screen remake of the Hollywood cult-classic film "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!"

Nichols and Sarine are writing the update, which Nichols plans to direct, producer M. Dal Walton III announced Wednesday.

Walton said he closed a deal with Killer Tomato Entertainment, Inc. to produce a reprise of the 1978 flick, which spawned three sequels, including the George Clooney vehicle "Return of the Killer Tomatoes!," as well as the Saturday morning "AKT" animated series.

Nichols' and Sarine's "Ask A Ninja" Internet series has gotten more than 80 million Web views, Walton said.

"'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!' is the masterwork of a generation. We can only aspire to recapture that magic," Nichols said in a statement.

"The original picture spawned a generation of entertainers inspired by the irreverent and hilarious political satire created by John DeBello, Costa Dillon and Steve Peace. The sublime comedy Kent and Douglas have created for New Media is both brilliant and hilarious -- they are the perfect team to bring 'Killer Tomatoes' into the 21st century," Walton said.
