Schwartzman breaks toes playing soccer

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Jason Schwartzman appreciates the irony that he ran barefoot in India without incident for a film shoot, then came home and broke his toes.

"I broke some toes or, as I phrased it awkwardly last night, 'I smashed some toes in half,'" Schwartzman told UPI in New York.

"I wasn't with George Clooney," he said, referring to Clooney's recent motorcycle accident. "I'm betting it happened the same night. He got a lot of press because he was on a motorcycle and I did mine in a yard, playing shoeless soccer."

Schwartzman was in town to promote his new film, "The Darjeeling Limited," co-starring Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson.

"I believe it was Alanis Morrisette who said: 'Isn't it ironic? And, yes, I really do think, a little too ironic.' End quote," Schwartman quipped. "It is true and ironic that I went through India shoeless for four months and, though, I got quite dirty, my skin remained unbroken and my toes unscathed. But in Santa Monica, California, you can break the heck out of some toes. I think that's good for the image of Southern California. It's a dangerous place."
