NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 19 (UPI) -- An account of the displacement of American Indians as the United States pushed westward paced all shows nominated for primetime Emmy awards.
Nominations were announced Thursday in North Hollywood, Calif. The 59th Primetime Emmy Awards is Sept. 16 in Los Angeles.
HBO's adaptation of Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" garnered 17 nominations, including nods for outstanding made-for-TV movie, direction, and supporting roles for Aidan Quinn, August Schellenberg and Anna Paquin.
HBO also scored 15 nominations for its recently concluded series "The Sopranos," which captured nods for best drama, and best acting for leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco and supporting cast members Michael Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco and Aida Turturro.
"Broken Trail," a Western about two men becoming guardians of five abused and abandoned Chinese girls, earned 16 nominations. The AMC cable channel mini-series received nominations for best mini-series, and for Robert Duvall for his leading role, and Thomas Haden Church and Greta Scacchi for their supporting roles.
For the networks, ABC's comedy, "Ugly Betty," led all shows with 11 nominations, including best comedy, best actress in a leading role for America Ferrera and best supporting actress for Vanessa Williams.
