Rockers plan to keep Garbage going

LOS ANGELES, July 17 (UPI) -- Wisconsin modern rockers Garbage haven't broken up despite the appearance of a career-spanning greatest hits set.

But the group's Butch Vig said "Absolute Garbage," which features one newly recorded song, "is the postscript to chapter one. Whatever we do next ... will definitely be Chapter Two."

Vig said it will likely be the summer of 2008 before Garbage -- best-known for hits such as "Stupid Girl," "Queer" and "Special" -- re-enters the studio. Singer Shirley Manson is working on a solo album and the other members have their own projects. When Garbage does regroup, however, a new sound will likely emerge.

"If we want to continue making records, we don't necessarily want to repeat ourselves," said Vig, who outside of Garbage has produced landmark albums for Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and the Pixies. "I think we're interested in making something that's much more sort of primal and stripped down."

"It'll probably be commercial suicide," he said with a laugh, "but the music business is so (messed up) now, maybe it'll be the most inaccessible record of our career and we'll have it be the biggest hit ever."
