Florence colors its festival Pucci

FLORENCE, Italy, May 18 (UPI) -- Italian fashion icon Emilio Pucci, who combined bold colors with geometric shapes, will be celebrated in Florence as part of an event honoring famous residents.

Pucci's distinctive brightly colored prints will be the focus of festivities this weekend in the Tuscan city's homage to the innovative designer, the Italian news agency ANSA said Friday. It also will mark the 60th anniversary of his first fashion house, the Pucci Maison.

Pucci's first Florentine boutique will reopen for the weekend, displaying several of his original pieces.

His daughter Laudomia, who took over the line when Pucci died in 1992, described his work as "maximalist in color but minimalist in form."

Although Laudomia is still the company's chief image consultant, France's Louis Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy Group acquired the brand in 2000.

Florence is celebrating a number of renowned residents -- Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, director Franco Zeffirelli -- in its "Florentine Genius" event, which runs until May 27.
