'Spamalot' romps in Olivier nominations

LONDON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The musicals "Spamalot" and "Sunday in the Park with George" both took multiple nominations for the Laurence Olivier Awards in London.

The Oliviers, presented by the Society of London Theatre, highlight the West End theater district's calendar, CNN said.

"Spamalot," based on "Monty Python" comedy material, captured seven nominations, including Tim Curry for best actor in a musical, Hanna Waddingham for best actress in a musical and a nod for best new musical.

"Sunday in the Park with George," a Stephen Sondheim production, followed with six, including Jenna Russell for best actress in a musical, Daniel Evans for best actor in a musical and Sam Buntrock for best director.

Other multiple nominees include "Wicked," "Rock 'n' Roll," "Cabaret," "Evita" and "Porgy and Bess."

Winners will be announced on Feb. 18.
