Madonna sparks controversy in Rome

ROME, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- About 70,000 fans crowded into Rome's Olympic Stadium for Madonna's weekend concert, during which she sparked conflicting reactions between fans and the church.

The stunt that caused the controversy, when the pop queen "crucified" herself on a cross while singing "Live to Hell," attracted the wrath of many religious groups before and after the concert, ANSA reported Monday.

There was also another controversial part of the show in which a video clip was shown where Pope Benedict XVI and former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi were alongside Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

Madonna fans seemed to still be able to enjoy the concert despite the pop star's controversial tastes.

One fan's banner called for Madonna to be made a "saint immediately," while another chided the church by declaring "I missed mass to come to see you."
