Hanks sets world record for movie grosses

NEW YORK, May 10 (UPI) -- Actor Tom Hanks was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records Wednesday as the "Actor With Most Consecutive $100 Million Grossing Movies."

Hanks appeared in seven consecutive films that hit the $100 million mark between 1998 and 2002, starting with "Saving Private Ryan" and wrapping with "Catch Me If You Can," Guinness announced in a news release.

The actor has had a total of 14 films that pulled in a domestic gross of more than $100 million and the streak would have been 11 if not for the 1996 film, "That Thing You Do," which grossed only $25.8 million, Guinness said.

Hanks is among eight actors tied for the Guinness World Record for most Oscars won in the best actor category. Hanks and Spencer Tracy were the only two, however, to win consecutive Academy Awards.

His next film, "The Da Vinci Code," will be released worldwide May 19.

"Guinness World Records 2007" is scheduled to hit store shelves in August.
