Chris Daughtry ousted from 'American Idol'

LOS ANGELES, May 10 (UPI) -- Rocker Chris Daughtry, expected by many to win the title of "American Idol," was voted off the Fox TV talent competition Wednesday night.

The audience watching the live elimination show gasped when host Ryan Seacrest announced the McLeansville, N.C., resident received the least amount of public votes following Tuesday night's episode featuring the music of Elvis Presley.

While Daughtry was the favorite among most odds-makers, at least two Internet search engines predicted his ouster, saying he had the least number of search hits among the final four contestants.

Taylor Hicks, Elliot Yamin and Katharine McPhee moved on to next week's competition when the number will be pared to two in preparation for the "American Idol" May 24 finale.
