OSLO, Norway, May 2 (UPI) -- Three men were convicted and three were acquitted in Oslo Tuesday in the theft of two paintings by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch.
Convicted were Petter Tharaldsen, Bjorn Hoen and Petter Rosenvinge, who were sentenced to jail terms of 8, 7 and 4 years, respectively, Aftenposten reported. They were also given 14 days to pay $121.7 million in restitution to Oslo Township for the missing paintings.
Two Munch masterpieces, The Scream and Madonna, were taken during a daylight robbery at the Munch Museum in August 2004. Neither painting has been recovered.
The men were ordered to pay Oslo Township the estimated worth of the paintings because the city of Oslo was its own insurer for exhibits at the Munch Museum, Aftenposten said. It was unlikely, however, the convicts would come up with the exorbitant sum.
