He played 13 years with the Mingus Big Band, founded by Sue Mingus to play the music of her late husband, Charles.

He had been hospitalized since April 2004, but left in October to conduct the Mingus band through a six-hour recording session. The three songs he arranged are included on "I Am Three," an album released last month.

The Arkansas native died July 4. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Gogel of Weston, Mass.; his son, John Stubblefield V of Joliet, Ill.; and his sister, Joyce Pattillo of Little Rock.
