Queen tops Beatles on chart ranking

LONDON, July 5 (UPI) -- Queen has surpassed the Beatles for the most weeks ever spent on Britain's album charts, "The Book of British Hit Singles & Albums" reports.

A team of researchers for the publication found that Queen has spent 1,322 weeks on U.K. album charts -- 29 weeks more than the Fab Four.

David Roberts, editor of "British Hit Singles & Albums," said the weeks-on-chart figure may be the fairest way to rank the most successful recording artists, since sales figures from the 1950s, '60s and '70s are "notoriously unreliable."

"British Hit Singles & Albums" -- published by Guinness World Records Ltd. -- said Elvis Presley ranked as the third most-successful act of all time on British album charts, followed by U2 and Dire Straits.

The rest of the Top 10: Simon and Garfunkel, Madonna, David Bowie, Elton John and Michael Jackson.
