Kilmer: British theater crowd smarter

LONDON, April 25 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Val Kilmer says British theatergoers are better educated than their U.S. counterparts, the BBC reported Monday.

Kilmer will make his London theater debut as the murderous drifter in "The Postman Always Rings Twice," which opens at the Playhouse Theater May 24.

Asked to compare the audiences on either side of the Atlantic, the 45-year-old "Top Gun" star told the BBC he favored London audiences.

"The audience is very sophisticated and probably the most well read on earth," he said. "The standard keeps deteriorating on Broadway -- the shows have become more Vegas-like."

In the upcoming production, British actress Charlotte Emmerson co-stars as Cora, the role played on screen by Lana Turner in 1946 and Jessica Lange in 1981.
