FCC chairman won't recommend 'Ryan' fine

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Federal Communication Commission Chairman Michael Powell is not recommending fines be levied against ABC stations that aired "Saving Private Ryan."

However, the remaining four other FCC commissioners must also vote on the matter.

Powell is not advocating that the FCC take action against the stations that did air the movie because the language and violence in the movie were part of an accurate representation of events.

The movie, a World War II epic starring Tom Hanks, was aired by 159 ABC affiliates as part of a Veterans Day tribute in November.

Several conservative family organizations targeted the ABC's Nov. 11 screening that they said featured levels of language and violence inappropriate for primetime viewing, reported Zap2it.com Tuesday.

At least 66 ABC affiliates refused to show the movie, which director Stephen Spielberg and ABC required must be shown uncut.
