LONDON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A British magazine voted "Get Carter," a 1971 film starring Michael Caine known for its graphic violence and telephone sex, as best film.
Total Film surveyed 25 movie critics for its poll, which gave "Get Carter" high marks for being groundbreaking and ahead of its time, Britain's Guardian reported Monday.
"It was pretty shocking at the time for its scenes of violence, and Caine played a pretty ruthless character. But Caine's character is now seen as one of the greatest anti-heroes of all time," said Matt Mueller, editor of Total Film.
The film stars Caine as Jack Carter, a London gangster who engages in telephone sex with the character played by Britt Ekland and shows a naked Caine at a shoot out.
"A Matter of Life and Death," released in 1946 and starring David Niven, placed second in the survey.
"Trainspotting," from 1996, was the most recent film to rank in the Top 10.
Other top films were:
"The Third Man," 1949, No. 4; "Life of Brian," 1979, No. 5; "The Wicker Man," 1973, No. 6; "Kind Hearts and Coronets," 1949, No. 7; "Lawrence of Arabia," 1962, No. 8; "From Russia With Love," 1963, No. 9; and "Naked," 1993, No. 10.
