Actress Kyle MacDonnell dies at age 82

SANTE FE, N.M., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Actress Kyle MacDonnell, dubbed "Miss Television 1948" alongside that year's "Mr. Television" Milton Berle," has died at her Sante Fe, N.M., home. She was 82.

MacDonnell, whose entertainment career flourished in New York in the 1940s and 1950s, died Tuesday, the Sante Fe, N.M., New Mexican reported Friday.

MacDonnell graced the cover of Time magazine on May 31, 1948, with a headline that read "Television Ingenue."

The model-turned-actress co-hosted NBC's "Today" show in the program's early days and she appeared on "For Your Pleasure," "Hold That Camera," "Girl About Town," "ABC Album," "Kraft Television Theater" and "The Ed Sullivan Show."

The actress, known throughout Sante Fe as Kyle MacDonnell Vernon, retired from show business in 1959 when she married Santa Fe banker William H. Vernon.

She is survived by her son from her first marriage, MacDonnell Gordon, and her daughter-in-law, Charlene Shildmyer.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Santa Fe.
