Nike designs John Lennon sneakers

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Nike is planning a Converse Chuck Taylor-style running shoe bearing the image of the late John Lennon, Hellomagazine.com reported Monday.

Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, made a deal with Nike for the special edition shoe called the "Peace Chuck," which will be imprinted with the ex-Beatle's signature line, "Imagine All The People Living Life In Peace," across the toe.

A percentage of the profits earned by the sale of the shoes will benefit charities working to promote world peace.

Approximately 400 different styles of the classic Chuck Taylor runner have been produced by Converse since the shoe made its debut in 1923.

Lennon, just one of many celebrity fans, wore the Chuck Taylor style shoe on the cover of the Beatles' "Abbey Road."

"Chuck Taylors are going to be around forever. The Egyptian Empire left the pyramids, the Roman Empire left the Colosseum. I think when America is gone 500, 800 years from now, Chuck Taylors will still be around," actor/singer Will Smith said recently.
