Val Kilmer will play Moses onstage

LOS ANGELES, July 15 (UPI) -- Producers of the new stage musical "The Ten Commandments" announced Thursday Val Kilmer will star as Moses.

Max Azria and Charles Cohen said Kilmer will head a cast of 50 in the production, whish is scheduled to open Sept. 27 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

The musical features music by film composer and music producer Patrick Leonard, best known as the composer of Madonna's hit "Like a Prayer," and lyrics by Emmy-winner and Grammy nominee Maribeth Derry. The director is Robert Iscove and the choreographer is Travis Payne.

Kilmer is best known for movie roles including Tom "Iceman" Kazanski in "Top Gun," Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" and the title role in "Batman Forever." He has previously sung the role of Moses in the DreamWorks animated feature "The Prince of Egypt." He also sang as Jim Morrison in "The Doors."

Iscove and his staff are working on the new production with Elie Chouraqui, who created "The Ten Commandments" for the Paris stage and is co-producer of the new U.S. production. Plans call for the show to tour North America following its Los Angeles run.
