Superman ready to fly again?

LOS ANGELES, June 17 (UPI) -- Plans call for production to begin late this year on a new "Superman" movie, Daily Variety said Thursday.

Warner Bros. has been trying for years to get an updated Man of Steel movie going, but without success. Variety said the studio has a "fierce appetite for additional tentpoles" -- big event-type movies such as "Harry Potter" and Sony's "Spider-Man" series.

The paper said Warner Bros. is in talks with Neal Moritz ("The Fast and the Furious") and Gilbert Adler ("Starsky & Hutch")to produce. The report also said that "Charlie's Angels" director McG -- while not signed to direct "Superman" -- tested six actors last week for the starring role.

The budget for "Superman" reportedly has been scaled back to somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million. There were reports last year that the screenplay the studio was considering would have cost $225 million-$250 million to produce.
