Cookson no longer 'most borrowed' writer

LONDON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Jacqueline Wilson has dethroned Catherine Cookson as the author whose works are most frequently borrowed from British libraries.

Children's book writer Wilson ended Cookson's 17-year reign at the top of the United Kingdom's library lending charts, the BBC reported Friday.

According to the Public Lending Right, Wilson racked up more than 2 million loans last year, while Cookson, who died in 1998 at the age of 91, slipped to fourth place. Wilson penned 16 of the 20 most-borrowed books at libraries.

The author told BBC Breakfast she was pleased by the honor.

"It feels very weird, I'm very happy about it," Wilson said.

"When I was a child, I was in and out of the local library practically every day, so it's lovely to know children still enjoy going to libraries and borrowing books," she added.
