Mariah Carey gives fan a thrill

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Singer Mariah Carey said Friday a 16-year-old Santa Barbara cancer survivor will open Carey's show Monday in Santa Barbara.

A publicist said Carey invited Becca Solodon to perform, after learning Solodon had a leg amputated two weeks ago. Carey learned about Solodon from Damian Young, who has produced records for Carey and is one of several recording industry pros who are helping Solodon towards her goal of becoming a recording artist.

Solodon suffers from soft tissue sarconia, a progressive cancer that generally attacks teenagers.

After HQZ Management executives Sam Frankel and Jerry Heller learned of her situation, Frankel and Damian rounded up studio musicians who played for free, so Solodon would make a record before her surgery.

"I was so inspired by Becca's determination in the face of her illness, we marshaled the forces to get her into the studio before listening to her voice," said Frankel. "When Becca started to sing, she blew us away."

Solodon said she was stunned at the invitation to perform with Carey.

"I think I'm just going to stand, because I can't move a lot," she said.
