'Pirates' treasure for Walt Disney Co.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Tuesday's home video release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" put an estimated $240 million into the Disney treasure chest.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the title sold 11 million DVD and VHS units in its first day in release on Tuesday, a new record for a live-action release.

Based on a ride at Disneyland and starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, the movie was the second-biggest U.S. box-office hit of 2003, grossing close to $305 million. It added another $345 million in foreign market grosses.

Disney-Pixar's "Finding Nemo" sold an estimated 20 million units during its first two weeks in home video release. Featuring the voices of Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, "Finding Nemo" is the biggest U.S. box-office hit of the year to date with $339 million, and the highest-grossing animated feature ever.
