Navy cruiser USS Cape St. George to get $35M in upgrades

Jan. 19 (UPI) -- BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair has been awarded a $35 million order to update the capabilities of the Navy guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George.

The deal, announced Thursday by the Department of Defense, slates the Cape St. George for a special selected restricted availability under a multiple-award indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract.

The ship, which is homeported in San Diego, Calif., will receive depot-level maintenance, alterations and modifications to enhance its capabilities. The work is expected to be complete by January 2019.

The full value of the contract was obligated when it was awarded, with $28 million coming from fiscal 2018 Navy operations and maintenance funds, which expire at the end of the current fiscal year, and $6.7 million from fiscal 2018 other procurement funds of the Navy. The contract also includes optional work that could push its final cost to more than $35 million.

The Ticonderoga-class cruiser was commissioned in 1993.
