Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Russia's new Tornado S rocket launch system has cleared official tests, the country's state-owned arms manufacturer Rostec announced.

According to Rostec, the Tornado S is capable of firing all rocket types used for the Smerch and Uragan. Splav Research and Production Association general director Vladimir Lepin says the new system "marks a new era in the industry."

The Tornado S is an upgrade to the 9A52-4 Tornado, considered by the Russian military to be the most advanced multiple launch rocket system, or MLRS, in its arsenal.

Currently, Russia's ground forces are the sole operator of the 9A52-4 Tornado. The weapon is capable of firing six rounds in 20 seconds, and has an 8-minute reload time. The system is based on the chassis of the KamAZ-63501 8x8 military truck for enhanced tactical mobility.

Rostec notes Splav's production efforts have sharply increased in recent years, and that it is cooperating with Arab and Asian partners to deliver more advanced rocket launch systems.
