ROME, June 29 (UPI) -- MBDA Italia has signed a contract worth more than $1.1 billion to supply Qatar's navy with multiple kinds of missiles, the company announced Wednesday.

The company will be supplying the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces with Exocet MM40 Block 3 anti-ship missiles, as well as Aster 30 Block 1 and VL MICA air defense missiles, MBDA said in a statement.

The contract signing follows a letter of award that was signed in Rome on June 16, with the framework of the government-to-government agreement signed between the Italian and Qatari ministries of defense.

The missile deal follows an announcement by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri earlier this month that the company would supply Qatar's navy with seven new vessels under a $4.4 billion deal.

The MBDA missiles will be deployed on the new Qatari ships, MBDA said.
