ROME, June 17 (UPI) -- Fincantieri has been awarded a $4.4 billion contract by Qatar's Ministry of Defense to provide the country with new ships, the company announced Thursday.

The contract calls for seven surface vessels, Fincantieri said in a statement.

Four will be 330-foot corvettes, one a landing platform dock ship and two will be offshore patrol vessels, the company said.

The contract also calls for support services to be provided in Qatar for 15 years after delivery of the vessels.

All the ships will be built in Italian shipyards, commencing in 2018, the company said.

Fincantieri has built more than 2,000 vessels for the Italian navy and other sea services.

It designs and builds surface ships, aircraft carriers, frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels, support ships and submarines.
