LINKOPING, Sweden, June 17 (UPI) -- Saab's AT4 family of disposable shoulder-launched weapons is to receive enhanced range and explosive capabilities, the company has announced.

The AT4CS ER variant extends the effective range of the anti-armor weapon to 600 yards. The AT4CS HE, or high explosive variant, is for use as a direct support fire weapon, with air-burst or impact detonation up to a distance of about 1,000 yards, the company said.

"The new members of our AT4 family further expand the great versatility of the weapon and emphasize its position as the leading disposable shoulder-launched support weapon on the market," said Andreas Andersson, product director, Ground Combat Dynamics.

The AT4 was first introduced into military service in 1987 for use against armored vehicles and as an assault weapon. It is currently used by 15 countries and has been optimized for use from confined spaces.

Saab provided no additional details of the system improvements.
