Italian Police receive another AW139

ROME, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Italian police have received the fifth of eight AW139 twin-engine helicopters under a contract signed in July, AgustaWestland said.

The helicopter features a high-definition forward-looking infrared radar, a satellite communication system, searchlight, rescue hoist and an advanced high-definition video down link that will also be retrofitted to police UH-139 helicopters already in service.

"The AW139 was chosen by the customer after a comprehensive evaluation process of competing bids, proving the AW139 to be the best value solution to meet its demanding mission and safety requirements," AgustaWestland said. "The replacement of old helicopter models with AW139s, partially funded by the European Union Frontex program, supports the fleet modernization plans of the Italian Police and will benefit the communities they serve."

The AW139 is a medium-sized aircraft with a speed of 193 mph and a range of 573 miles. The Italian military and government agencies operate the aircraft and AustaWestland said the Italian police order brings the number operated or ordered by Italy to 31 aircraft.
