ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A guided hyper-velocity projectile for U.S. Navy gun systems is to be developed and demonstrated by BAE Systems under an Office of Naval Research contract.
The award, worth $33.6 million, initiates Phase 1A of the development program and is scheduled for completion by June of next year, the company said.
"The HVP takes the next evolutionary step in providing an affordable, precise, multi-mission capability for multiple gun platforms," said Chris Hughes, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. "We look forward to applying our expertise and technologies to this important program."
The HVP is a low-drag, compact projectile that does not require a rocket engine to reach extended ranges. It will be in a modular design for use by both 5-inch and 155mm gun systems and the future electromagnetic Railgun.
BAE said its team for the development of the system includes United Technologies and Custom Analytical Engineering Systems.
