Ship defense study for QinetiQ Maritime

LONDON, April 5 (UPI) -- A study on coordinated defense for British navy ships against small, fast-attack boats ships has been commissioned by the U.K. Ministry of Defense.

QinetiQ Maritime said the study together two innovative company concepts, including combining existing sensors and coordination of close weapon systems.

"The project, awarded to QinetiQ, is particularly innovative in nature in that it is looking at an integrated approach to responding to the small boat threat, combining detection, weapon firing and decision making," said Philip Smith, Maritime Above Water program leader, Program Office, at the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory.

"QinetiQ was selected not only because of its previously proposed solution but also because of its extensive capabilities, knowledge and track record in the area of maritime command information systems coupled with the quality of their proposal."
