CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Major systems on a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries will be controlled through a system from Northrop Grumman.
Among the shipboard systems that will be governed by the Machinery Control System are automated propulsion, electric plant and fuel.
The MCS is being supplied to Huntington Ingalls under a $50.6 million contract, with deliveries of components to begin in 2014.
"This order affirms our customer's confidence in our ability to design, integrate, test and deliver some of the Navy's most sophisticated distributed control technology on platforms that have significantly reduced the Navy's total ownership costs," said Bill Hannon, vice president of Northrop Grumman Maritime Systems.
Northrop Grumman said the MCS includes 56 data acquisition units, 27 workstations and 1,125 fire sensors that will be located throughout the vessel.
Huntington Ingalls will install the equipment at its shipbuilding facility in Pascagoula, Miss.
Northrop is also under contract to supply and integrate the MCS for LHA-6.
