Iraq buying Czech aircraft

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Iraq is buying 28 L-159 dual purpose trainer and combat jets from the Czech Republic under a deal worth $1 billion.

The L-159, which can also be used as a light attack aircraft, is manufactured by the Aero Vodochody Co.

"I am glad I can announce that we have agreed upon delivery of 28 pieces of L-159 to Iraqi Air Force," Czech Defense Minister Alexandr Vondra said after a visit to Aero Vodochody with an Iraqi government delegation.

Twenty-four of the aircraft will be new.

The L-159 has a maximum speed of 581 miles per hour at sea level, a full-load combat range of 351 miles and a service ceiling of 43,300 feet. It carries AIM-9M air-to-air missiles. AGM-65 missiles and a range of bombs.

Deliveries of the aircraft will begin in 2014 but a completion date was not disclosed. Other provisions contained in the sales arrangement, such as support services, were also not disclosed.
