Lockheed developing new destroyer radar

MOORESTOWN, N.J., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has given the U.S. Navy its final proposal in its bid to gain the contract to develop a new air and missile defense radar system.

The scalable air and missile defense system radar would be used aboard the future DDG-51 Flight III class destroyer.

"Our team has advanced a mature, affordable and highly reliable radar system with substantial investment by our company and the Navy," said Carl Bannar, vice president of Integrated Warfare Systems and Sensors at Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems and Sensors business.

"Designed with the sailor in mind, our modular, open hardware and software architectures minimize ship design changes, simplify operations and maintenance and enable capability improvements to accommodate future mission needs."

The S-band radar and radar suite controller would provide "significantly increased sensitivity" for simultaneous detection and engagement of missile threats.
