UNTERSCHLEISSHEIM, Germany, April 23 (UPI) -- A newly developed coastal radar by Cassidian of Germany successfully demonstrated its capabilities in a series of field tests.
In tests in France, South Africa and the Middle East, the radar "reliably detected small and fast-moving targets" in rough seas at distances of as much as 11 nautical miles, as well as individuals on the shore.
"SPEXER 2000 Coastal is the worldwide first security radar using the latest radar technology of Active Electronically Scanning Array, which provides a multitasking and multimode capability and increases the detection and target assessment capability substantially," said Elmar Compans, head of Cassidian's Sensors and Electronic Warfare unit. "Therefore, one SPEXER 2000 Coastal can replace two or more conventional radars."
Cassidian said SPEXER 2000 Coastal features an instrumented range of 21.6 NM, high Doppler and velocity resolution and high sea clutter suppression for surveillance of coastal areas and maritime infrastructure, such as oil fields and harbors. With a unique signal processing architecture, it is able to detect not only sea activity but also land and air targets, thus eliminating the necessity of deploying different sensors for simultaneous surveillance of each sector.
Cassidian said the radar is compact all-in-one system, can be carried by two people and can be tripod-mounted for temporary installation.
