PARIS, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Additional MU90 anti-submarine torpedoes have been delivered to the French military by the Eurotorp GEIE.

The French defense procurement agency DGA said the delivery comprised 25 MU90 torpedoes, which are designed to be launched from aircraft or surface vessels.

Eurotorp GEIE had previously delivered 225 of the missiles to DGA for the French navy.

Eurotorp is a consortium established in 1993 for the development and manufacture of light-weight torpedoes. It is owned by French companies DCNS and Thales and WASS, a subsidiary of Italy's Finmeccanica.

DGS described the MU90 torpedoes as a third-generation weapon for use against nuclear-powered or conventionally powered submarines. It can be used in deep and shallow waters.

France has deployed the weapon on maritime patrol planes and Lynx helicopters as well as on two classes of frigates.

The agency said a third class of frigates and NH90 helicopters will be outfitted with it.
