KVH selected for fiber-optic gyros

MIDDLETOWN, R.I., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. company KVH Industries Inc. has been contracted to support remote stabilized weapon systems with the integration of its fiber-optic technologies.

KVH, a satellite-based high-speed Internet, television and voice services provider, received the contract from an undisclosed client. Under the $1.7 million order, KVH will deliver its precision DSP-3100 fiber-optic gyros technologies.

Officials say the KVH's DSP-3100 fiber optic gyros are expected to be integrated with remote stabilized weapon systems, a technology designed allow gunners to target and fire their weapons system safely inside the protection of their vehicles.

According to a news release, KVH's DSP-3100 fiber optic gyros provide "precise optical stabilization and weapon recoil control for remote stabilized weapon systems units while ensuring that the weapon stays on target whether the vehicle is stationary or on the move."
