Under the $14 million deal, BBN's language scientists and researchers will continue work on the Arabic-language version of the automatic translation technology under development to support U.S. defense analysts.

The GALE program is a DARPA initiative to develop a technology enabling an immediate translation of critical information with at least 90 percent accuracy.

"DARPA's ambitious GALE program has already made significant advances in automatic language processing," Tad Elmer, BBN Technologies president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"We are achieving a level of accuracy that, before this program, was regarded as impossible."
