LM to upgrade Kuwaiti radar systems

SYRACUSE, N.Y., April 13 (UPI) -- The Kuwait Defense Ministry has contracted Lockheed Martin to provide upgrades to long-range radar systems used for Kuwaiti strategic air surveillance.

U.S. company Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to support upgrades to the Kuwaiti air force's AN/FPS-117 long-range radar. The upgrade contract is part of an effort by the Kuwait Defense Ministry to extend the life of the radar for another 20 years.

The AN/FPS-117 radar, originally deployed by the Kuwaiti air force in 1993, is a three-dimensional L-band radar that provides strategic air surveillance of air targets.

"There will be a four-fold reduction in components in this upgraded radar, and that will result in improved reliability and maintainability, as well as reduced life-cycle support costs," Frank Mekker Jr., Lockheed Martin program manager, said in a statement.
