Magnolia imaging tech demonstrated

WOBURN, Mass., April 1 (UPI) -- Magnolia Optical Technologies Inc. said it has developed a high-speed imaging system using a fiber-optic tether as part of a U.S. Army program.

U.S. company Magnolia announced its newly developed fiber-optic tether-based multi-sensor imaging system successfully demonstrated data transmission speeds of more than 10 gigabits per second.

The imaging system, developed with support from Massachusetts-based iRobot, was part of an Army small-business innovative research program. Officials said the high-speed imaging technology has applications that support defense and commercial robotic systems.

The multi-sensor imaging system "demonstrates that images from multiple sensors can be sent over the fiber-optic cable to more than 546 yards, with the operator far away from harm's way," according to a news release.
