ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has contracted BAE Systems to support voice and data communications between ground vehicles and air controllers.
British company BAE Systems was contracted to support the Air Force's Tactical Air Control Party Modernization program. Under the deal, worth $233 million if all operations are exercised, BAE will install voice and data communications on 400 of the Air Force's ground vehicles.
Officials say the TACP-M program is part of an effort to improve the communication capabilities between air controllers and commanders on the ground.
"BAE Systems understands the critical need for improved tactical air control communications as a core capability for our air, sea and land forces," Ted Wright, acting president of BAE Technology Solutions & Services in Rockville, Md., said in a statement.
"Our long history of supporting Air Force missions will ensure that air controllers will have a superior communications system that provides the best close-air-support available."
