New Hampshire SSN-778 to be christened

GROTON, Conn., June 19 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Electric Boat announced it will christen the U.S. Navy's New Hampshire SSN-778 nuclear attack submarine Saturday in Connecticut.

General Dynamics Electric Boat officials and construction partner Northrop Grumman say the design of the New Hampshire makes it the Navy's most advanced nuclear attack submarine capable of waging multidimensional warfare.

The New Hampshire, a Virginia-class ship, is the fifth ship of 10 expected to be built in the class. The new Virginia-class ships are slated to replace the aging Los Angeles-class submarines for the Navy.

Officials say the New Hampshire is sponsored by Cheryl McGuinness, whose husband, Tom McGuinness, died during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, as the co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11.
