Electric Boat gets subcontract change

GROTON, Conn., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. firm General Dynamics Electric Boat has won a contract modification for work on the nuclear sub USS Hawaii.

The company said in a statement Sept. 26 it had "received an $8.4 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to plan the post-shakedown availability -- PSA -- on the nuclear submarine USS Hawaii -- SSN-776." Electric Boat described itself as "a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics."

"With this contract modification, Electric Boat has been awarded a total of $21 million to plan and buy long-lead material for the PSA, which will comprise maintenance, repairs, alterations and testing. The shipboard work is expected to begin in March 2008, with completion scheduled for January 2009," the company said.

Electric Boat said it handed over the Hawaii to the U.S. Navy in December 2006. "It is the third ship of the Virginia Class and the second to be delivered by Electric Boat," the company said. "Hawaii was commissioned May 5, 2007. Electric Boat and its construction teammate, Northrop Grumman Newport News, have received contracts to produce a total of 10 Virginia-Class submarines," it said.
