Guardian Tech contract extended

HERNDON, Va., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The Department of Homeland Security announced it has extended Virginia-based Guardian Technologies International Inc.'s threat detection research contract.

Guardian Technologies International is a medical imaging and threat detection technology provider in the homeland security markets and healthcare. The company's cooperative research and development agreement with the DHS's Transportation Security Laboratory has been extended for six months to further evaluate the company’s trademarked PinPoint threat-detection technology. The TSL is a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate.

“It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this milestone extension to our contract with the TSL,” said Bill Donovan, president and chief operating officer of Guardian Technologies International, in a statement.

“We are looking forward to continue working closely with this elite agency within the Department of Homeland Security to provide them with the technology and materials they need to implement next-generation solutions to help safeguard our nation’s citizens. We believe we are now one step closer to making PinPoint available to airports across the country and around the world.”

Company officials say the milestone extension validates Guardian Technologies International's strategic initiative to commercialize its next-generation threat-detection technology. The PinPoint technology is an effort to improve explosives, guns, knives and ammunition detection in concealed containers. The PinPoint software is designed to facilitate integration with commercial X-ray equipment at airports and other security checkpoints.

“We continue to be very optimistic and excited to work with the U.S. Government’s premier facility for testing and validating transportation security technologies,” said Carl Smith, vice president of operations of guardian technologies. “The extension of the CRDA among other initiatives complements the DHS Transportation Security Administration’s mission to make explosives detection at the passenger checkpoint initiatives a national priority. The TSL program is a critical step in the testing and evaluation process.”
