Homeland Security ex-boss in China

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Tom Ridge, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, held meetings with several high ranking Chinese leaders this week, according to state-run media.

Xinhua reported Tuesday State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with a delegation from the American Foreign Policy Council led by Ridge.

Tang said the presidential meeting between Hu Jintao and George W. Bush in New York this September saw both leaders agree to "comprehensively promote a Sino-American constructive and cooperative relationship."

China is willing to actively implement the consensus reached between the two leaders, boost exchanges, mutual trust and expand cooperation "to push forward bilateral relations in a healthy and steady way," Tang added.

Ridge and his delegation held talks Monday with China's top cop, Zhou Yongkang, who holds a high level portfolio on security issues as head of the Ministry of Public Security and the Chinese equivalent of the Drug Enforcement Agency.

He is also a member of the Communist Central Committee Politburo and Secretariat organizations.

Government-controlled news said Zhou "briefed guests on China's peaceful development strategy and its scientific concept for development," with both sides "exchanging views on Sino-U.S. relations, economic cooperation, national security, anti-terrorism and other issues of common concern."
