57 Islamic nations fight terror

SANAA, Yemen, June 27 (UPI) -- An Islamic summit that opened in Yemen this week gave priority to the fight against terrorism, Arab News reported.

The fight against terrorism was to take center stage at the three-day gathering of the 57-nation Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers that opened Monday, the Jeddah-based Saudi newspaper said.

Other subjects to be discussed at the gathering included the representation of the Islamic world in the United Nations Security Council and cooperation between nations in the Organization of the Islamic Conference in promoting human rights, the role of women, youth, the environment and sustained development, the paper said.

"The conference acquires particular importance in view of the current political circumstances, the situation in the Arab-Islamic region, and the various challenges of the new era," Organization of the Islamic Conference Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in a statement.

The conference would also address security issues involved with the Arab-Israeli conflict, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Cyprus, Kashmir, and the India-Pakistan peace process, Ihsanoglu said.
